The |optic chiasm|(a) is located on the undersurface of the |hypothalamus| near the |pituitary gland|. The |optic nerves| cross in an "X" formation at the |optic chiasm|. This is where the |fibers| from the medial (or nasal) half of each |retina| cross and join the optic tract of the opposite side and continue to the |brain|. The visual information entering the |eyes| passes to the visual |cortex| at the back of the head. The left |eye| and the right |eye| see the same object, but from slightly different angles. Information from the right side of the left |eye| and from the right side of the right |eye| reaches the right side of the visual |cortex|. The information from the left |eye| crosses over the |optic chiasm|.
